Xavier Roberts, the American artist and entrepreneur behind the Cabbage Patch Dolls, was born on October 31, 1955, in Cleveland, Georgia. Roberts was exposed to a wide variety of doll-making techniques and materials during the American Folk art movement in the late 1970s, notably the work of Louisville, Kentucky’s Martha Nelson Thomas.
Inspired by his mother’s quilts, he began working on a quilted doll. The “Little People” dolls Roberts created were the result of extensive experimentation. Roberts and his friends set out to explore the Southeast in search of folk art exhibitions, and they did so.
Roberts began selling his “baby” dolls, which he had fashioned by hand, at these events. Roberts founded Original Appalachian Artworks, Inc. and began producing Little People in a remodeled Cleveland hospital he called “Babyland General Hospital.”
By 1982, the Little People had morphed into the ubiquitous Cabbage Patch Kids. In 1984, consumers bought 20 million dolls; by 1999, that number had risen to 95 million worldwide. Cabbage Patch Kids creator Martha Nelson Thomas sued the company’s founder, Roberts, in January 1980.
In 1976, while Mrs. Thomas was selling her dolls at a fair where she met Roberts. He was so impressed that he asked her to prepare some for him to sell at the Georgia state park where he was employed. She claims she stopped supplying the dolls after they started selling there.
