The confidence in his talents was demonstrated by appointing him Garda Commissioner for a five-year term.
There were some difficult moments during Jeremy Harris’s time as Garda Commissioner. A vote of no-confidence in Commissioner Harris was held by the Garda Representative Association in July 2023, with the primary reason being disagreements about rosters.

Commissioner Of The Garda, Drew Harris, Hired At A Salary Of €250,000
Garda Commissioner Drew Harris, formerly of the Police Service of Northern Ireland, has been appointed to a five-year tenure in the position. His new annual salary of €250,000 is a substantial rise over his previous salary of €180,000. In September, Mr. Harris will begin his new position.
Mr Harris has the option of bringing his own team into the Garda, albeit whether or not he will do so is currently unknown. He joined the PSNI when he was 19 years old and has spent all but two of those 53 years policing in the North.
About 16 years ago, he served as a police officer in Scotland on a two-year secondment. In 1989, his father, an RUC officer, was killed by an IRA vehicle bomb. After years of turmoil and during a time when it is planned for the organization to undergo extraordinary reform, Mr. Harris will take the helm of the Garda.
Former commissioner Nóirn O’Sullivan initiated several of these updates as part of a modernization programme. When the Commission on the Future of Policing in Ireland releases its findings in September, additional reforms will be revealed. These may include separating State security from the Garda.

Program for Change
A chance for “new leadership and improved policing in our communities,” as Taoiseach Leo Varadkar put it, was what Mr Harris’ appointment represented.
He added: “He will drive forward our reform programme for An Garda Síochána. His appointment is a good day for Irish policing.”
According to Justice Minister Charlie Flanagan, Mr Harris’s appointment comes at a “critical time” for the Garda.
“Drew can be assured of my support and that of the Government as he faces the challenge of transforming An Garda Síochána so that it becomes a model of policing excellence, equipped to deal with the huge range of challenges facing police services worldwide.”
Mr. Harris was selected through a revamped hiring procedure established by the Policing Authority and administered by the Public Appointments Service. Anyone, including individuals without any prior experience in law enforcement, was eligible to enter the contest.
Police Authority Chair Josephine Feehily said her organization was “very satisfied” to submit Harris’s name to the government for approval.
People’s Faith
She felt “heartened” by the large pool of applicants from both inside and outside the company.
“We look forward to getting to know [Mr Harris] and to working with him in achieving our shared objective of ensuring a modern, professional Garda service which continues to enjoy the trust of the Irish people,” she said.
Mr Harris is a married father of four who was born and raised in Lisburn, Antrim-Down. This is the first time the Garda has ever had a leader brought in from outside the State.
The Garda has had two former commissioners who were civil employees who were brought into the force against their will. Between the years of 1938 and 1952, Michael Kinnane served as commissioner; between the years of 1952 and 1965, Daniel Costigan was in charge.
